Updated Sealant Recommendations
An article published in the September-October 2016 issue of Pediatric Dentistry presents the ADA’s updated evidence-based recommendations for the use of pit-and-fissure sealants on the occlusal surfaces of primary and permanent molars in children and adolescents.
Conclusions reached after conducting multiple controlled trials include:
- Sealants are effective in preventing and arresting pit-and-fissure occlusal carious lesions of primary and permanent molars in children and adolescents.
- Sealants could minimize the progression of noncavitated occlusal carious lesions.
- There was not enough evidence for the panel to identify a preferred sealant material over others.
